Our Rainbow of intelligence
Linda Culverwell (ARTBASH) and Jonny Stockbridge were the chosen artists to bring this public art project to life. We wanted to create ‘gems’ to be discovered in the community garden area, to be played with engaged with or simply sat on.
Partnering with Manor Longbridge Primary School, we settled with the concept of Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Year 4’s embraced the idea of individuality. In order to capture the full range of our abilities and talents that people possess, Gardner theorizes that people do not have just an intellectual capacity, but have many kinds of intelligence, including musical, interpersonal, spatial-visual, and linguistic intelligences.
We further developed the concept of a rainbow, symbolising how we shine as individuals through a spectrum of cultural experiences and talents.
Informed by the art created by the children in the workshops, we record, montage and layer imagery through digital techniques. This resulted in digitally printed ceramics and mosaics adorning seating areas and oversized cast embellished orbs. As you walk through the gardens colourful mosaics can be discovered, gradually change through the spectrum from red to violets.
